El Niño is a natural phenomenon characterized by the unusually warm ocean temperatures across the Equatorial Pacific. This is the exact opposite of cold temperatures that are brought about by La Niña. But both phenomena are associated with extreme weather across the globe.

According to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, the chances that the world will experience another El Niño event this 2014 has exceeded 70%. This technically means that there is a higher chance of damaging floods and extreme warm weather leading to droughts all over the world.

The worst El Niño happened in 1997 to 1998, brought massive flooding in China’s Yangtze River, which also killed more than 1,500 people. If it will strike the world this 2014, several issues could take place including very hot days and nights as well as the drying of several crops and wetlands.
