Coastal communities are some of the most vulnerable areas when it comes to extreme weather and Hurricane Sandy was a very stark and clear reminder of that. And because of climate change, that kind of vulnerability is only sure to increase.

Scientists Leila Sievanen and Heather Leslie of brown University are going to discuss the challenges at the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Boston’s annual meeting. Both are members of an interdisciplinary research team that focuses on human-environmental interactions that are in coastal regions.

A significant portion of the world’s population resides in coastal areas – about 40 percent. In the United States, the number is even higher with about 53 percent of the population living in coastal areas and that figure is even expected to climb up to 63 percent by the year 2020.
