Extreme Weather May Affect NFL Games

In the past, severe weather was only a problem for NFL games late in the season, but things are changing now. Several NFL cities including Chicago, Buffalo and Cincinnati are set to be affected by severe weather.

Chicago is the one to bear the brunt of the extreme weather effect.

According to an article by Cindy Boren for The Washington Post, officials are making sure that everyone will be safe by going over evacuation strategies and taking away objects that may become airborne. “The priority is to get fans to safe zones in the event of severe weather,” said Tim LeVebour, Soldier Field’s general manager.

Extreme weather shelters in the Metro Vancouver area are getting ready as the temperaturethere is starting to drop. There are eight cities in the area that have extreme weather shelters. These shelters are designed to accommodate hundreds of people.

Last year the shelters were put into good use.

According to an article on globalnews.ca, “Last winter, the extreme weather shelter sites across Metro Vancouver provided a total of 4,013 nights of service. No one was turned away for a lack of space.”

An expert in climate studies has warned that the warming climate may lead to more extreme weather around the world. The expert has cited the bush fires in Australia and the devastating typhoon in the Philippines. While these events were not caused solely by a warming climate, it was a factor.

Dr Liam Phelan has warned that the warming climate would make things even worse in the future.

“The link between climate change and extreme weather events is intuitive enough, if you’re playing cards and you’re dealt a bad hand well that’s just chance right, anybody can get a bad hand,” he says. “And when that happens over and over and over again then you start to ask questions about why that’s so.”

Oklahoma Citizens Told to Prepare for Wintertime Conditions

Residents of Oklahoma have been forewarned that winter may get extra cold and harsh; therefore, making it necessary to have extra precautions ready to fight the extreme weather and the hazards that may come along with it. The losses caused by extreme weather have gone up. According to a report by the World Bank, the economic losses caused by extreme weather now amount to $200 billion annually. That is set to increase even more as the extreme weather problem is set to worsen.

Scientists have warned that floods, storms and drought will get worse.

According to foxbusiness.com, “Reinsurance company Munich Re has estimated total reported losses from disasters were $3.8 trillion from 1980 to 2012, attributing 74 percent of those to extreme weather.”
